Oral Hygiene Training

Proper and successful maintenance of teeth is a significant challenge in our society. The fundamental method of combating tooth decay and gum disease is through proper oral hygiene. Motivating and educating individuals on how to truly achieve good oral health is not as simple as it may seem. We all develop a habit of brushing our teeth from a young age, and later on, we perform this action mechanically, without considering whether we are doing it correctly. Only individual training and clear instructions provided by trained dentists ensure long-term success for each patient. Proper oral hygiene can be practiced daily if we adopt the skills and knowledge necessary.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT TOOTHBRUSH?

Our recommendation is a toothbrush with soft bristles (ultrasoft). Also, toothbrushes with a smaller head are better because they are easier to maneuver inside the oral cavity. Toothbrushes can be made of natural or synthetic bristles.

It is more suitable to choose toothbrushes with synthetic bristles as the likelihood of bacteria retention is lower.

DENTAL FLOSS OR INTERDENTAL BRUSHES?

Due to the frequent inadequate use of dental floss, which can cause gum damage, interdental brushes are a much better choice. They provide more effective cleaning between teeth and are completely safe for gums when used correctly.

It is recommended to use interdental brushes once a day, preferably before bedtime.

HOW IMPORTANT ARE TOOTHPASTE AND OTHER AUXILIARY PRODUCTS?

It is important to choose a toothpaste that contains fluoride in a concentration of 1100-1450 ppmF. However, it is crucial to know that no auxiliary product (toothpaste, mouthwash solutions, etc.) can replace proper brushing and mechanical plaque removal. This is the foundation of maintaining good oral hygiene.

HOW TO PROPERLY BRUSH YOUR TEETH?

  • Position the toothbrush at a sharp angle towards the gums so that half of the brush head is on the gums and half on the teeth.

  • Gently move the toothbrush in small circular motions without applying pressure (to avoid injuring the gums).

  • Start by brushing the outer surfaces of the teeth, then the inner surfaces, and finally the biting surfaces.

  • Repeat the movements several times in one spot and gradually move the brush towards the opposite side of the jaw until all teeth are cleaned.

  • It’s important to note that the tongue should also be cleaned during tooth brushing.

Mastering the proper technique takes time and practice, but it’s worth the effort as it helps maintain the health of your teeth and gums.

HOW TO MAINTAIN DENTAL HYGIENE FOR YOUNG CHILDREN?

  • The first dental visit is recommended even before the eruption of baby teeth so that parents can receive proper instructions.

  • Gently clean your baby’s gums with gauze wrapped around your index finger after each feeding.

  • Once the baby teeth start erupting, begin using a toothbrush.

  • Baby bottle tooth decay most commonly occurs when babies consume milk or juice from a bottle for extended periods or during the night – monitor bottle usage.

Maintaining proper hygiene is crucial because inadequate brushing yields the same results as not brushing at all.

At LAVIN DENTAL CLINIC, our doctors have completed special training in proper oral hygiene instruction (ITOP) and can explain everything you need to know in a simple manner.

All it takes is a little commitment toward preserving a radiant smile and the health of your teeth!
